In 1828, Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is taken to London by Professor Lovell. Trained extensively in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, he prepares to enroll at Oxford's Royal Institute of Translation, known as Babel. The institute, central to translation and magic, utilizes enchanted silver bars for power. As a Chinese in Britain, Robin grapples with loyalty to his homeland amidst Babel's quest for domination. Amidst Britain's unjust war with China, Robin faces a critical decision.
