Deborah MckKellar’s multi-layered artworks are known for their highly textured surfaces. Shining metallics, rich silks, painterly splashes, silkscreen prints and explorative mark-making blend together to form their own unique visual language.

Southeast Asia meets East Asia aims to take the viewer on a visual journey through a history of Deborah’s art practice. It showcases her initial explorations of Southeast Asia’s culture and heritage through Singapore’s shophouses and culturally recognizable motifs that tell stories of Singapore.

Deborah’s recent artworks delve into personal exploration, moving from solely focusing on Singapore to a more universal language. In a globalized world where cultures merge, Japanese motifs are seen together with Chinese landscapes. Just as a ‘Shan Shui’ (Shan - Mountain, Shui - Water) painting is not an open window for the viewer's eye but rather an object for the viewer’s mind, Deborah’s imaginary worlds are a searching of the soul. Looking beyond the surface, these landscapes hope to provoke thought and search deeper into our personal navigation and our response to life’s journey.

Through her art, Deborah's desire is to share the beauty of light in darkness, recognizing that art is essential to the wellbeing of the spirit.
