In October 2019, the General Committee (GC) made three proposals with renderings and budgets to make improvements to the Club’s Pool deck. A membership vote was held. Members voted to do nothing.

In February 2022, Management recommended a small budget of $500K for FY2023 to enhance the functionality and aesthetics of pool deck, taking into account capital costs and expected maintenance costs. The GC approved the budget in May 2022.

Two GC Members were tasked to gather facts, data, staff opinions and report directly to the GC. They requested three callouts for an Advisory Panel of architectural/design professionals – Pool Area Design Advisory Council (PADAC) – to assist the Club with a holistic approach. 15 Members applied from a variety of professional backgrounds, three were selected.

The Advisory Council will meet after this year’s Annual General Meeting with the objective to set priorities and improve the pool deck with the $500K budget by August 2023.

The Club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held in-person at the Club and virtually via livestream on Wednesday, November 9, 2022. Eligible Members may vote (1) in-person, on-site at the AGM, (2) by Absentee Ballot at the Club, (3) electronically in advance of the AGM, by November 8, 2022.

All Eligible Members would have received their user login credentials via email by Lumi Technologies Singapore Pte Ltd. E-voting and Absentee Ballot at the Club are open from October 25, 2022, 12:00 p.m. to November 8, 2022, 6:30 p.m.

Non-voting Members will receive their unique login credentials to attend the virtual AGM as observers by November 3, 2022.

The American Club and Peter Burwash International (PBI) are delighted to announce that Jorge Pinilla, PBI Tennis Director of Players Development at the Club, was recently invited to undertake the Level A coaching certification from the Global Professional Tennis Coach Association (GPTCA) at the Angelique Kerber Tennis Academy in Poland.

By joining the GPTCA and completing the certification, Jorge can now rub shoulders with the finest group of professional coaches in the tennis world – Toni Nadal, Ivan Ljubicic, Magnus Norman, Alberto Castellani, Larri Passos, Jose Perlas, Patrick Mouratoglou, to name a few – recognized by the ATP Tour. He is the only Level A coach in Southeast Asia and the first Colombian to attain this esteemed certification. Congratulations to Jorge!

Dear Members,

2022 has been a year of transitioning towards endemic living. The economy hastened to re-open only to be met by a host of challenges brought about by the pandemic aftermath. Businesses had to modify operations to manage inflation, supply chain disruption, energy price hike, changes in work pass regulation and manpower shortages. Among all of these problems, the toughest to address is the lack of manpower which is prevalent across the board from the administration team to the operation teams.

The Club’s Team Members have to step up by working longer hours, going beyond their job scope, training new hires & interns and postponing annual & home leaves. Collaboration, commitment and working as One Club, One Team made it possible for Members to continue enjoying the service standards that are unique to The American Club.

This exemplary teamwork has also elevated the Club to be awarded the Top 100 Platinum City Clubs of the World 2022/23 and recognized as a Great Place to Work.

We would like to invite our Members to express their appreciation to our Team Members by making a contribution to the Annual Staff Holiday Fund.

A standard deduction of $150 will be reflected in your November 2022 Statement of Accounts. If you would like to contribute a larger amount or opt-out of this program, please fill up and submit this form. Your contribution will be distributed to all of the Club’s eligible Team Members.

We would like to extend our thanks and appreciation for your generosity. If you have any queries about the program, please drop me an email at generalmanager@amclub.org.sg

Sincerely Yours,

Rick Coate
General Manager

During the redevelopment, the Club’s hot water system was relocated to the Claymore Rooftop (L4) and distributes hot water supply throughout the building, all the way to sên Spa, located on Basement 3. The pipes alone, including of the branch lines, is of a length of 350 meters. This design causes pressure loss in the countless valves and turns in the main system. As such, we have been experiencing fluctuating water temperature, loss of hot water supply, and heat loss in the pipes when unused for a period of time. This has been a disputed defect for way too long so we have budgeted to rectify it with a new independent system by the beginning of October.

Background
The hot water system is located at the Claymore Rooftop (L4) and distributes hot water supply throughout the building, all the way to sên Spa, located on Basement 3. The pipes alone, inclusive of the branch lines, are of a length of 350 meters. This causes pressure loss happening in the countless valves and turns in the main system. As such, we have been experiencing three main issues.

1. Fluctuating water temperature – Due to unbalanced pressure in the system.
2. Loss of hot water supply – This happens when there is more demand elsewhere in the Club that drains more supply to other branches. For example, when the kitchen is using hot water for cleaning the dishes.
3. Heat loss in the pipes when unused for a time period – This is most common in the mornings when our team and Members have to flush the residual cold water in the pipes resulting in wastage.

This is being disputed by both the consultant and contractor since the redevelopment handover of the system. They have done multiple “enhancements” but still the problem is unresolved. Worse still, we were unable to get involved as we cannot risk Defect Liability Period (DLP) causing more disputes. When DLP was finalized in July, the outcome of the dispute has still left problems. Management decided that we settle this ourselves as we cannot wait any longer. Hence, a budget was put for the hot water system in the Capex for FY2023.

Actions
This project is spearheaded personally by Nerang, assisted by Azlan. We have engaged M/S Aumada Pte Ltd who has done and resolved many hot water issues for their clients.

After many inspections and discussions, we have come to what we believe is the best solution for the Club.

Recommended Solution
• To install four sets of 100-liter heat pumps supplying to both male and female B2 showers.
• This system will be independent, therefore reducing the demand from the main hot water line.
• There will also be a bypass connected to the main line as a redundancy plan, in the unlikely event that any one of the system breaks down.
• With the reduction in demand from B2 showers, hot water volume to other areas in the Club will improve.

Savings
Savings per month = $1,135

We are now aggressively actioning the works, many of which can only be done after midnight. We are pushing for completion by the beginning of October.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and thank Members for their patience and understanding.

Club Member Kim Eng shares her story about her awe-inspiring journey through life; from war refugee to grateful American.

When Landy Eng, President of The American Club donated a frayed American flag to the Club during its 4th of July celebrations, it wasn’t just a gesture of goodwill or largesse; nobody could have anticipated the heartwarming story around it.

Since the beginning of time, mankind has used symbols  and signs to convey ideas and messages in a way that would be as universally understood as possible. When no written language was available, it was graphical representations of items, actions, and events that transmitted information and knowledge to others.

Take for instance, the American flag. Its symbolism depicts the original 13 colonies and 50 states of the Union, as well as the attributes of hardiness, valor, purity, justice and perseverance. To most people, especially Americans, the flag is also a motif of freedom, hope, strength, opportunity, and democracy. To Kim Eng, Landy’s wife of over three decades, the flag stands for so much more – a bastion and  testament to her awe-inspiring journey through life; from war refugee to grateful American.

Escaping the Vietnam War

Born Kim-Oanh Bui, Kim grew up in Vietnam during the turbulent years of the Vietnam War. Just  before the Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, young Kim joined thousands of other war refugees fleeing from their homeland via flights to the Philippines, Guam, and finally, the United States of America. She made the daunting trip alone, without her parents or any other family member to care for her.

When Kim arrived in the United States, she was situated at Camp Pendleton in California, where she would remain for the next few  months. Helmed initially by a US Army Major, Captain Lon Getlin who served as Commander of the facility, it was the first US military base to provide a  safe haven for Vietnamese evacuees in Operation New Arrivals. The mission saw over 50,000 war refugees transported to the base in the largest humanitarian airlift in history.

Settling into Camp Pendleton

Barely a few weeks into her stay at the camp, Kim was robbed of her belongings, leaving her even more destitute than before. However, Kim’s spirit of resolve would not be broken. Being the resourceful young girl that she was, she sought help from a camp leader who brought her to Captain Getlin, who compassionately took her under his wing and brought her to a bank to open a safe deposit box to keep her valuables.

It was the same fatherly friendship between her and the Army Major that Kim became an interpreter for him. She translated Vietnamese to French as he carried out his official duties. At the time, Kim did not speak a word of English.

Kim’s first 4th of July was in Camp Pendleton, a profoundly bittersweet experience for her and her fellow refugees in the US; they were celebrating their freedom from the terrors of war, but in a foreign land so far from home, with so much uncertainty ahead. It was during this emotional festivity that Kim recalls seeing the American flag, unfurled in all its glory and flapping valiantly in the wind, as if it were keeping watch over the camp and its inhabitants. A symbol of safety and enduring hope, the flag became synonymous with a fresh start in the United States.

New Beginnings and a Happy Reunion

Kim’s foray into the realm of her new life began in September 1975 when she was taken in by the Schellerups, the loving family of a war cameraman turned Hollywood film director, who would foster her through the years ahead. Not long after in November, Camp Pendleton closed its doors as a refugee center, the flag she had admired on the 4th of July lowered for the last time, signaling the end of a chapter in Kim’s life.

Keen to assimilate into American society, Kim enrolled in Hollywood High, where she became fluent in English. All this while, she hadn’t forgotten her real family and was doing her utmost to search for their whereabouts.

After four years, she had finally tracked down her birth mother and the rest of her family. The reunion took place on Thanksgiving Day of 1979, an occasion very much befitting of the momentous event. With her house in order and inspired by the impact of Captain Getlin’s kindness on her life, Kim then went on to volunteer at numerous other refugee camps in California and across the United States.

A Present from the Past

On July 23, 1989, Kim’s wedding day, that impact was further compounded when Kim received a wedding gift from Captain Getlin, with whom she had lost contact for 15 years. It was the very flag that had flown over Camp Pendleton and captivated Kim when she was just a child; one that had now taken on the symbolism of love, reconnection, and family – in addition to safety and hope.

Since then, the flag has remained a prized possession in the Eng’s home for 33 years until it was donated to the Club on July 4, 2022. Its display will be graced by Captain Getlin, who has arranged to fly to Singapore next year to visit Kim and Landy in a homecoming of sorts.

And as Kim’s journey comes full circle, we see more clearly than ever how Kim – in her fortitude, resilience, generosity, and determination to thrive – has become the consummate embodiment of the values espoused by the American flag.

Building a community of support – through the best and worst of times.

Families help each other when times are tough, and The American Club family is no different. In 2015, Club Members raised the idea of an employee relief fund to help Team Members in times of hardships and emergencies. Originally known as the Emergency & Education Fund, a formal proposal was put forward to the General Committee and was approved shortly after to which is now known as the EAGLE (Emergency Access Grant for Club Employees) Fund.

Over the years, the EAGLE Fund has helped numerous Team Members alleviate their financial burdens arising from mounting hospitalization bills to homes being destroyed by flash floods, among others.

Aquatics Swim-a-thon Goes Swimmingly Well

This year, the Aquatics team kicked off the annual EAGLE Fund fundraiser with a Swim a-thon. 12 teams with a total of 72 swimmers came together on sunny Sunday February to complete their goal of swimming 74 laps per team in Team Gold Stripes an hour. Members showed their support by sponsoring their favorite swim teams.

For the first time in the history of the EAGLE Fund, both the Junior and Senior swim squads participated in this fundraising event together. They started bright and early at 8:30 a.m. in the morning, sporting their “EAGLE Fund Supporter” swimming caps, and swam their hearts out.

Another first this year, the teams in each category that raised the most amount of money would have their names inscribed onto the EAGLE Fund Shield to be proudly displayed at the Pool. With this incentive in mind, the heat was on. All six teams managed to complete the 74 laps in under an hour and collectively raised an outstanding $6,215, with Team Gold Stripes raising the most money – $1,450 – and securing their place on the Shield.

The main event started at 10:30 a.m., with the Masters Swim Team taking to the water. Members’ favorites Team Wonder Women and Team Top Gun made a comeback this year, along with a few new faces such as Team Spice Girls and Team Shaken Not Stirred. We also saw Team Abdul and Team Fasala participating again this year.

The competition heated up as the Masters swimmers went head on to see which team could complete the laps in the shortest time. Team Top Gun emerged victorious, and managed to retain the title of “Fastest Swim Team ” from the last Swim-a-thon.

Not too far off from the Junior and Senior swim squads, the Masters Swim Team raised a total of $6,720, with Team Abdul raising the most money – $1,650 – and securing their spot on the Shield beside Team Gold Stripes.

In total, the Aquatics Swim-a-thon raised $12,935.

The Tennis Team Plays It Forward

This year’s EAGLE Fund Tennis Tournament was a month-long fundraising event which ran from March 1 to April 2, 2022. 27 Doubles teams from four different categories – Open Doubles, Women’s Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Parent & Child Doubles – played in a round-robin format, where the top two teams from each category would advance to the finals.

The finals were held on April 2 at the Club with supporters cheering on their favorite teams from the stands. The day ended with a prize presentation to the following winners:

Open Doubles – Team Gautam & Luv

Women’s Doubles – Team Sheila & Louise

Mixed Doubles – TeamYD & Pipere

Parent & Child Doubles – Team Brent & Hanna

The Tournament managed to raise $10,789 for the EAGLE Fund. Special thanks to Member Bill Cornwell who co-organized the tournament, and to all the participants for making the event a success. With that, the Aquatics Swim-a-thon and Tennis Tournament raised a grand total of $23,724, all of which went directly to the EAGLE Fund to provide short-term financial assistance to the Club’s Team Members in need.

The Future of EAGLE Fund

When asked about his hopes for the near future, Bill Cornwell, one of the founding members of EAGLE Fund who has been a Club Member for over 26 years said, “I look forward to it becoming a month-long tradition every month of March that Members will be excited about. I also hope that more outlets and departments will be involved in this annual event to raise more money for the Fund. For a start, we could perhaps bring back the pro tennis exhibition matches and on-court silent auction for next year’s EAGLE Fund event.”

“Having been in the Club and Hospitality industries before, I know how hard the Team Members work to make Members happy. One of the reasons why the EAGLE Fund was founded was for Members to show their appreciation for all the hard work that the Team Members do. We want them to know that they will have the Club and Members’ support in times of crisis or hardship.”

Team Members step up to achieve better health through the National Steps Challenge.

Keeping fit or being active can be daunting, especially when we live in such a fast paced society, with work, family and other commitments taking up much of our time. However, studies have shown that even small increments of physical activity can lead to significant health improvements. According to the Health Promotion Board, for a sedentary adult, walking the recommended 7,500 to 10,000 steps daily can help lower high blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels, and improve glucose control .

To nudge Singaporeans to walk more, the Health Promotion Board introduced the National Steps Challenge in 2015 to encourage people to lead a more active lifestyle by taking more steps, and rewarding them with vouchers for hitting their daily target.

During a recent health survey and screening conducted by the Club for its Team Members, results showed that many Team Members suffered from high cholesterol and high blood pressure. In response to this, Team Wellness was formed with the aim of enhancing the health and well-being of Team Members and to build camaraderie through initiatives such as fitness activities, health talks and screening, and mental wellness programs.

One such fitness activity that Team Wellness has signed the Club up for is the National Steps Corporate Challenge that sees organizations nationwide and inter-company compete against each other based on the highest daily average step count.

At the end of the 15-week steps challenge, the Club placed 13th in the industry ranking and 60th in the national ranking.

Walking to Good Health

From our Management team, Senior Director of Finance, Angie, leaves the house at 5:00 a.m every morning. for her morning brisk walk. She straps on her steps tracker to clock the number of steps she will take. On weekday mornings alone, she hits 11,000 to 12,000 steps easily as she walks and jogs around the vicinity of her home. During lunch time, she makes an effort to get out of the office to clock in more steps. At the end of the day, Angie would have clocked in an average of 20,000 steps, equivalent to walking nearly 15km!

A nature lover, Angie unwinds with her family on the weekend by venturing to the various parks and nature reserves around Singapore such as Thomson Nature Reserve, Bedok Reservoir, East Coast Park and Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. She also gets out of the house to do the occasional weekend grocery shopping in order to break away from lounging at home all day.

Angie is no stranger to the world of exercise. She started exercising daily since she was diagnosed with diabetes in 1999. Initially, she would do more high impact exercises such as running and cardio activities, but as age caught up with her, she turned to less strenuous forms of exercise such as brisk walking and jogging.

“Brisk walking is an easy, convenient and effective way of keeping my blood sugar down. It also helps me maintain a healthy lifestyle so that I can have the occasional indulgence as I love food,” said Angie.

“Since I am already walking so much everyday, why not earn myself some vouchers while doing so?” Angie on why she decided to take part in the National Steps Corporate Challenge. Angie has consistently been the Club’s Top 5 “steppers” week on week since the steps challenge started in January, and has no plans on stepping down from the top.

Wonders of Brisk Walking

Rodel, Lifeguard and Swim Coach from the Aquatics team said his motivation for joining the National Steps Corporate Challenge was driven by health reasons and his desire to live a long life. “Although I have been doing different forms of exercise throughout the years, I like the idea of constantly moving and exploring beautiful sceneries – so I decided to join the National Steps Corporate Challenge,” he explained.

Three months on, Rodel is the Club’s top stepper week on week, clocking in an average of 30,000 steps a day. Rodel shares, “When I first found out about this challenge, I shared it with my friends and encouraged them to join me so that we can go brisk walking and jogging together.”

Rodel’s go-to brisk walking spots are the Botanic Gardens, Marina Bay Sands and MacRitchie Resevoir where he frequents twice a week. As part of his daily routine, he also chooses to take the stairs instead of the lift at the Club, and walks to the nearby malls during his breaks.

Apart from keeping fit, another benefit that he reaped was weight loss – he had shed close to 4kg since embarking on the steps challenge. He also shared that brisk walking has helped him relieve stress and get better sleep at night.

For those who are still unsure about stepping up to the challenge to reap the health benefits, Rodel ’s advice is to “start slow, do what you can and work your way up. When you start, it’s actually much easier than you’d think – the more you walk, the less lethargic you feel .”

Dan Durkin, Director of Food & Beverage, dishes out tips and tricks on how to make healthy food taste delicious – even your vegetable-loathing munchkins will love it.

Struggling to prepare healthy meals that not only are kind to your waistline, but also taste good on your fork? You’re not alone. Many home cooks have a tough time figuring out how to make healthy food taste delicious. And many assume that only unhealthy food tastes good , while healthy food is too tasteless and looks a little sadder on the plate. Fortunately, they’re wrong. Check out some of Dan’s healthy eating tips for making any healthy meal into one you’ll savor.

A Little Goes a Long Way

A little bit of salt won’t hurt you. But don’t fall into the trap of adding way too much salt to make up for a meal’s low fat content. Cut back on salt and try herbs and spices instead.

Into the Oven

Many people hate the taste of super-healthy veggies, such as beetroot. But you can learn to love them and benefit from their nutritional content by preparing them the right way. Mellow or balance out the earthy flavors of beets by roasting them. Just cut off the leaves and stem. Then, line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and bake them for at least half an hour. Peel and serve with mustard. Roasting works great with other veggies, too. Most just need to be tossed with a bit of olive oil and topped with spices.

The Trending Vegetable

Steam and puree cauliflower, and use it in place of cream In dishes, such as risotto or creamed spinach, swapping the high-fat cream of cauliflower makes the dish lighter and healthier. But this unlikely swap also adds extra fiber, vitamins, and nutrients to your meal.

The Club’s Healthy Options

Let it sit briefly then strain and refrigerate. The American Club offers a plethora of low-calorie, plant-based and meatless dishes.

Head down to Tradewinds and get their Superfood Chopped Salad, a beautiful bowl of mesclun greens, spinach, kale, avocado, grapes, broccolini, almonds and sunflower seeds wrapped in a layer of balsamic vinegar.

Or swing by Union Bar for the meatless alternative to the Korean Fried Chicken – Korean Cauliflower Bites. Or try Dan’s ultimate favorite Grillhouse Impossible Burger, a plant-based patty topped with guacamole, American cheese and roasted garlic aioli spread.

Liquid Gold

If you’re cooking healthy meals, you already know to use butter in moderation. Supercharge butter with herbs and spices so you can use less overall. Thyme, garlic , and lemon zest all make great additions, especially if you’re cooking meat. Just heat the butter in a saucepan until it foams, then remove it from the heat, and add your herbs, spices, or flavoring of choice. Let it sit briefly then strain and refrigerate. With these simple tips, eating healthy can be flavorful, nutritious and fun.
