Tomas Biernacki, Director of Tennis
Tomas was invited by Peter Burwash International (PBI) to join The Club as the Director of Tennis. Prior to his stint at The Club, Tomas was the Davis Cup and Fed Cup Coach for Denmark and was also responsible for the National teams 12- to 18-year-olds there. It was there that he coached some of the top players in the world – both seniors and juniors. Before that, Tomas was also the Tennis Director (elite section) for Scandinavia’s largest tennis club which had 3200 active playing members each week. Fun fact: this is also the club Tomas first picked up tennis at!
The Swedish citizen’s passion for tennis started long ago when he was merely 5-years-old. His idols in tennis were former World No. 1’s Stefan Edberg, Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras and Thomas Muster. So enamoured was he with the world of tennis, that he aspired to be as passionate as his childhood idols.
Today, Tomas’ passion and enthusiasm for Tennis clearly shines through during his numerous interactions with Club Members. Besides tennis, Tomas also enjoys travelling, reading, racing sports and hitting the gym for a hard workout. Tomas is proficient in English, Swedish, Polish and German, with basic command of Serbian and Croatian.
Muhammad Azhar Zainudin, Tennis Professional
Born in Singapore, Azhar took an interest in sports at an early age, playing tennis and soccer at the age of 7. He particularly excelled at Tennis and by 15, he represented Singapore in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Juniors around Asia.
Azhar graduated from RMIT, Melbourne with a Bachelor in Advertising & Design. However, the love of tennis brought Azhar to the Club and at the age of 18 in 1992, he decided to coach part time and focussed all his efforts on tennis, which he felt he excelled at more naturally.
Azhar’s passion and determination to make Tennis coaching a career was evident and The Club appointed him Tennis Director in 2002. His career progressed and he left The Club in 2004 to gain more exposure and coached at various properties including the Swiss Club, Hollandse Club, Fairmont Hotel and Shangri-la Hotel in Singapore.
Azhar joined Peter Burwash International (PBI) in 2007 and returned to The Club to coach.
Azhar is now a dad to three lovely children and enjoys quality time with them at the beach or playing tennis. In his free time, he enjoys watching movies or travelling around the world with his lovely other half. Azhar enjoys the cultural exchanges and meeting the local people in the cities he visits.
Besides his first love for tennis, Azhar continues to play soccer and has found working out at the gym his new fitness regime.
Azhar is fluent in English and Malay, and can speak a bit of Mandarin and Arabic.
Herman Ali, Tennis Professional
Herman has been a full time tennis professional for the past 20 years.
His years of experience include working with some of Singapore’s most prestigious schools such as Hwa Chong Junior College, Tanjong Katong Girls' School and Nanyang Polytechnic. Herman’s coaching goal is to always create a fun, productive atmosphere to help students.
His passion for tennis started at a young age when he began playing the game at 9. He competed in the Singapore and Malaysian Junior Tennis Circuit and later the inter-varsity games, representing Temasek Polytechnic.
Prior to joining Peter Burwash International (PBI) in 2007, Herman’s club experience included coaching at the Laguna National Golf & Country Club, Amrita Spa Swiss Hotel, Hollandse Club and Swiss Club.
Joao Oliveira, Tennis Professional
Originally from Brazil, Joao’s prior assignment before coming to The Club was the Reynolds Plantation in Georgia. Joao grew up playing tennis in a small town in Brazil, and was ranked number one in his region at the age of 15 and 16, as well as attaining state rankings.
Not too long after he started teaching locals, he developed an interest in coaching tennis as a career. This led him to pursue his University degree in Physical Education, and also a national coaching certification from the Brazilian Tennis Confederation (CBT). Prior to joining Peter Burwash International (PBI), Joao served as a tennis professional at a tennis and squash academy in Varginha, Minas Gerais, teaching private lessons and clinics and organizing tennis related events and tournaments.
After graduating in Brazil, he went to the United States to play NCAA college tennis, first living in Laredo, Texas and then moving to Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan. In the summers, he was a tennis professional at Camp Takajo in Maine, a former PBI affiliated program, recognized as one of the best summer junior camps in America.
Besides tennis and sports, Joao's favorite activities are traveling and meeting new people. He is fluent in English and Portuguese, with working vocabulary in Spanish.
Jaime Rodriguez, Tennis Professional
Jaime is a native of Bogota, Colombia. His most recent PBI assignment was at Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai, providing instructional and social programs for an active club membership as well as guests of the Jumeirah Hotel. He also worked at Jumeirah Beach hotel in Dubai and at Al Bustan Palace in Muscat, Oman.
Jaime is a graduate of Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration (Finance) and played #1 singles and doubles and served as team captain at GSU. He was also a hitting partner of the Junior World Championships and the recent top 50 ATP Donald Young at Tennis in Motion Academy in Atlanta, GA. Additionally, Jaime served as a Tennis Doubles Coach for the ALTA tennis association for almost 2.5 years, and as a Manager for the Colombian Tennis Federation, supervising the organization's financial statements and managing the Davis Cup and Fed Cup teams.
